Meet Dave

I think Governor Dayton is wrong when he wants to increase taxes on families and businesses, and I haven’t been afraid to say so -- and I hope you’ll stand with me in challenging the Governor’s failed record.

I’m an ordinary man, and with your help, I’ll have the honor to serve as Governor of Minnesota.

Dave Thompson Announces Endorsement by Senator David Hann

Senate Minority Leader Hann Endorses Thompson / Benson for Governor

Lakeville, MN – Senate Minority Leader David Hann (R-Eden Prairie), has endorsed Dave Thompson and Michelle Benson for Governor and Lieutenant Governor.

Senator Thompson stated, “I have had the honor to work closely with Senator David Hann since my election to the Senate in November 2010. He is close friend and a mentor.

“Senator Hann is universally respected for his knowledge, work ethic, and ability to advance conservative ideas in the legislature. During his tenure as Chairman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, he led the charge for spending restraint and meaningful healthcare and entitlement reform. He achieved many of his goals, despite having to battle Governor Mark Dayton all the way. It is truly an honor to have the support of Senator Hann, the Leader of our Caucus, and a great leader in the conservative movement in Minnesota.”

Senator Hann said, “I strongly encourage my fellow delegates to endorse Dave Thompson for Governor and Michelle Benson for Lt. Governor. Dave and Michelle are not afraid to fight for our positive vision for Minnesota’s future, and they’ve helped lead our caucus against one-party liberal control these past two years. More importantly, I trust them. I trust them to lead our party in the 2014 election and I trust them to lead our state to prosperity for the next four years.”

We’ve proved it can be done…

Earlier this week, a bill I authored was signed in to law. The law prevents the government from keeping property seized during an arrest IF there is insufficient evidence to convict or get a plea from the defendant. In the absence of this law, some people would have to go to court to retrieve seized property EVEN IF THERE WAS NO CONVICTION OR ANY KIND OF ADMISSION OF GUILT. That is wrong!

Serving in the minority can be difficult. Most of what we do is vote “no.” However, even in the minority, we can advance our cause given the right leadership and a willingness to persevere. This legislation proves it can be done.

People often ask how I will be able to govern, given that we will have a Democrat Senate until at least January 2017. First, we must persuade the public and open-minded Democrats in the legislature that our ideas are the right ideas. Then we must be willing to work together and get it done for the people.

Here is a link to an article in Forbes that covered this legislation. See you in Rochester!

Dave Thompson Responds to Governor Dayton’s State of the State

Senator Dave Thompson (R-Lakeville), candidate for governor, issued the following statement in response to Governor Mark Dayton’s State of the State address.

“Governor Mark Dayton finally gave his State of the State address now that we are near the end of the legislative session. Rather than using the address to share his vision with Minnesotans, he used his speech as a campaign stop.

“The governor admitted that quality education is essential to our state’s future, and to our children’s ability to compete in a global economy. Yet this governor signed into law a bill that eliminated the requirement for teachers to pass a basic skills test. He also signed legislation eliminating the test that was used to make certain our high school graduates have attained the level of achievement necessary to succeed in today’s world.

“The Governor said that because of the Obamacare people in Minnesota with pre-existing medical conditions are able to get insurance coverage. This is a false claim. Minnesotans with pre-existing conditions have been able to get healthcare through the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association (“MCHA”) since 1976. The Governor did not mention the approximately 200,000 Minnesotans that were forced off of medical plans by Obamacare / MNshure. He did not mention that medical costs in the first three months of the year soared, placing further pressure on family budgets.

“Finally, there are clouds on the economic horizon as a result of this governor’s irresponsible spending and tax increases. This is because the Dayton / Obama policies of excessive spending and taxation are slowing the economy. There is already evidence of this happening both in Minnesota and nationally. For the months of February and March, tax revenues in our state came in approximately $67 million under forecast. And nationally, we experienced an anemic 0.1% economic growth rate. The only way to turn this tide is to implement pro family, pro growth policies that makes our state a leading global competitor.”

Whom do the Democrats fear?

Dear Delegate:

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support for Team Thompson over the last several months. Because of your efforts, we are in a good position to win the endorsement on May 31, and take our campaign to all Minnesota voters. More and more people are coming on board as our message takes hold.

Almost 10 months ago we launched our campaign for governor. From day one my priorities have been to build grass roots support, win your endorsement, put together a good organization, and raise the resources to win this election and defeat Mark Dayton.

In the most competitive and crowded fundraising field in recent history, our campaign is proving it is gaining steam while others are losing momentum.

I am not a career politician. Unlike my opponents, my “Rolodex” does not contain a long list of political contributors built over years of running for office or holding Party positions. As a sitting Senator, I have been defending you at the Capitol since February 25. These responsibilities limit my time to campaign and fundraise. And finally, I have stayed true to my convictions by not participating in the Political Contribution Refund (PCR) program. Some people told me this was unwise, but I believe it is always best to do what you believe is right, even if it puts you to a bit of a political disadvantage.

Despite all of this, in the first quarter of 2014, our campaign raised $67,000.

We have proven that we can win the battle of ideas, we have put together a good organization, and we can raise money. We have proven that we have what it takes to win the endorsement, fend off any primary challengers, and defeat Governor Dayton in November.

Please take just a few minutes and listen to this radio segment known as “ask the liberal.” You will hear it from the horse’s mouth: Democrats in this state do not want to face Dave Thompson and Michelle Benson in the general election!

Thank you again for your support!

Yesterday I attended a public hearing on the Southwest corridor light-rail line.
These were my thoughts throughout the meeting.

Dishonest or Incompetent: What Didn’t He Know, and When Didn’t He Know It

“The Buck Stops with Me” – Mark Dayton, MPR, December 19, 2013

Lakeville, MN – Senator Dave Thompson, candidate for Governor, and Senator Michelle Benson, candidate for Lt. Governor, issued the following joint statement in response to reports that Governor Dayton was aware, prior to its October 1, 2013 launch, that systemic problems with the website could prevent thousands of Minnesotans from obtaining health care coverage.

“Governor Dayton is either dishonest or incompetent. And while we do not take these words lightly, the facts now make clear that Governor Dayton had enough advance notice to stop the train wreck that is MnSure, and he chose to do nothing.

“The fact is, Governor Dayton knew well before the meeting at his residence cited by the Star Tribune that Minnesota was hurtling towards disaster. The Governor had ample opportunity to understand the short comings of MNsure operations.

  • In the fall of 2012, CIO Tom Baden told the MNsure Oversight Committee that operations were situation “rellow” (red or yellow status), meaning most critical tasks were behind schedule.
  • On January 31, 2013, Senator Benson sat across from the Governor at a breakfast meeting and told him that the exchange would not be ready by October 1, 2013. Senator Benson warned the administration that without a drastic change in the scope of work, the system would fail.
  • During the 2013 session, Republicans pleaded with Governor Dayton to allow experts to serve on the MNsure Board of Directors.
  • In the summer of 2013, experts told us repeatedly that the exchange would not be ready for an October 1, 2013 launch.
  • On January 10, 2014, Governor Dayton told MinnPost that he “didn’t know about the serious technical issues plaguing MNSure until after the exchange’s October 1 launch.”

We come to the unfortunate conclusion that either the governor isn’t telling us the truth, or he is incapable of performing the job that he was elected to do.

Either way, the only way we will make sure that the people of Minnesota get the health care, the leadership, and the honesty that they need is by electing a new Governor.

Let’s Make A Statement

We have less than 24 hours to make a statement.

We are about $3,500 away from our online fundraising goal, but to hit that milestone before tonight’s midnight deadline, I’ll need your help.

Please chip in $50, $100 or any amount you can afford to help us reach our end of quarter goal!

I know that if everyone reading this email chips in, we’ll easily surpass our goal and send a powerful message to our opponents that we have the momentum in this race and the support to sprint toward the finish line.

We must beat Mark Dayton! I believe my communications experience makes me the candidate that can inspire the base and win over all Minnesotans to replace Governor Dayton and restore a Republican majority to the House!

Let’s send a signal we’re going to win this race and restore conservative leadership in Minnesota! That we’re going to stop Mark Dayton’s tax increases that will crush our economy! That we’re going to keep Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid from taking more money from Minnesota and sending it to other states! And that we’re going to focus on fixing our schools, creating jobs, and making our great state an even better place to call home!

To get to the Governor’s office, I need your help now. Donate $50, $100 or any amount you can afford to help us reach our end of quarter goal before the midnight deadline!

I’m looking forward to closing out the fundraising quarter strong and taking another important step toward victory.

Let’s make a statement today.
